In the book, Thorin never promised them gold. The people of Laketown marched up to Erebor after the Master’s insistence that surely Thorin and his Company were dead, and they could take the gold for themselves. And then the men of Laketown and the elves of Mirkwood really did look more like thieves than refugees.
But here, Thorin made them a promise. He promised that all would share in the wealth of Erebor. And in the end, they’re going to go up to the mountain, realize Thorin is still alive, and go “Remember that gold you promised us? We kind of need it. We’re homeless now.”
And Thorin Fucking Oakenshield is going to go “lolnope.”
